Alkeran is an anti-cancer ("antineoplastic" or "cytotoxic") chemotherapy drug.

Alkeran is classified as an "alkylating agent." It is used for Multiple myeloma, Ovarian cancer, Neuroblastoma, Rhabdomyosarcoma, Breast cancer. Used in some conditioning regimens prior to bone marrow transplant.
The recommended dose is 2 mg. Take this medication by mouth on an empty stomach (1 hour before to 2 hours after meals). The amount of melphalan that you will receive depends on many factors, including your height and weight, your general health or other health problems, and the type of cancer or condition being treated. Your doctor will determine your dose and schedule.
Melphalan can lower blood cells that help your body fight infections and help your blood to clot. You may get an infection or bleed more easily. Call your doctor if you have unusual bruising or bleeding, or signs of infection. Avoid activities that may increase your risk of bleeding or injury. Use extra care to prevent bleeding while shaving or brushing your teeth. Do not receive a "live" vaccine while using melphalan. The vaccine may not work as well during this time, and may not fully protect you from disease. Live vaccines include measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), rotavirus, typhoid, yellow fever, varicella (chickenpox), zoster (shingles), and nasal flu (influenza) vaccine.
Do not use melphalan if you are pregnant. You should not use melphalan if you are allergic to it, or if prior treatment with this medication was unsuccessful in controlling your disease. To make sure melphalan is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: a weak immune system (caused by disease or by using certain medicine); liver disease; kidney disease; or a history of chemotherapy or radiation.
Possible side effect
The most common side effects are nausea and vomiting. Less common side effects are mouth sores, diarrhea, loss of fertility, hair loss, nephrotoxicity and arrythmias.
There are no known drug/drug interactions with oral Alkeran.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, seizure.
Store the medicine at room temperature between 20-25 C (68-77 F). Store away from moisture, heat, and sunlight. It is not recommended to store in a bathroom and places available for children.
